Cancer Research UK’s beautiful advert

In December last year, Cancer Research UK released a surprisingly beautiful TV advert. It’s evocative, powerful, and comes with a very succinct message:

One day, research will beat cancer. And, the more research we do, the sooner that day will come.

The idea that doing more research will bring about discoveries more quickly is central to to the Scienceogram: as we mention on the Big science page, no amount of time spent not looking for a cure for cancer is going to find one. It makes more sense to think of discoveries as a certain number of person-hours, or a certain investment away, rather than a number of years.

So, give it a watch: if you’re looking for an unashamedly emotive reason why more spending on science makes sense, you need look no further than this poetic ad.
